Punk. Τhe subculture that became mainstream culture.

Editorial book design shaped by punk culture

An independent alternative publishing house in Greece commissioned this editorial book design project. The publication focused on the punk movement of the mid-1970s. The work included book design, image curation and editorial layout. Its visual direction used contrast, visual noise and the DIY attitude of punk culture. Alongside the publication, I designed a small set of launch materials. These included a poster, T-shirt and badges inspired by the visual codes of the movement.

Shaping punk history into a bold editorial object

The book’s visual language brought archival imagery together with forceful contemporary typography. Black surfaces, fluorescent colour and abrupt scale shifts gave the publication a direct physical presence. Inside the book, the layouts balanced documentation with visual rhythm. Photographs, references and cultural fragments were curated into spreads that felt raw but controlled. As a result, the book carried the energy of punk without becoming a nostalgic imitation of it.

Building rhythm through image, type and contrast

The editorial layout was designed to keep the pace active from spread to spread. Large typographic statements, cropped photographs and strong colour blocks created moments of interruption within the reading flow, echoing the energy of zines, music press and underground print culture. The image editing helped organise the historical material into a sequence that felt informative, visual and deliberately intense.

Extending the book into launch material

For the book launch, the editorial language was translated into a small set of promotional pieces. The poster carried the cover’s graphic force into a larger format. At the same time, the T-shirt and badges turned the identity into wearable objects. These references connected the project to punk’s own visual culture. Together, the materials gave the publication a more social and physical presence beyond the printed page.

A compact editorial system for an alternative publication

The project gave the publication a strong visual identity without simply reproducing punk clichés. Image curation, bold typography and a limited colour palette gave the book its own attitude. The result worked both as cultural documentation and as a graphic object. The supporting poster, T-shirt and badges extended the editorial book design beyond the page. Together, they created a focused launch system for an independent publishing project.
